All the writers who talk about these huge product and book launches, $10k+ months, and getting tons of traffic to their posts all have one thing in common:
They Have an Email Newsletter That Helps Them Sell Products, Land Clients, and Grow Their Audience on Auto-Pilot.
Without an email newsletter, you’re letting writing platforms and social media companies decide your fate.
One little algorithm change and, poof, your income is gone overnight.
Worse, some platforms will ban or delete your account (I know a Medium writer who got his 60k follower account deleted without explanation).
I Recently Talked to a Popular Medium Writer...
Sometimes the Medium algorithm gets wonky. In her case, her earnings dropped massively.
I asked her:
“Did you keep an email list?”
She said no and I tried my best to comfort her but I knew she messed up.
She had quit her job to write on Medium full-time, so her entire income was subject to the whims of a writing platform, all of which could’ve been prevented had she started her newsletter.
Also, even though you can make decent money from writing on platforms like Medium, the real money is made behind the scenes via email.
All of the true professional writers who make six and seven figures per year have an email newsletter. Zero exceptions.
Until you start and grow your email newsletter, you have a writing hobby, not a writing business.
If you want to build an algorithm-proof strategy to make predictable and consistent income from your writing business then keep reading…
“The Money is in the List”
“Do you really think I need it?” she asked.
“Yes, just trust me on this one.” I said.
This is what my former student Niharikaa asked me about starting an email newsletter.
Here’s what she has to say about newsletters today after using hers to build a six-figure business:

When she wants to launch a product, she can send a note to 14,000 people. Think the odds are pretty high she’ll make some money?

To put that into perspective…
Her email list is roughly the size of Allen Field house, the arena that the 12-time National Champion Kansas Jayhawks Men’s Basketball team plays in.
When you build your list right, it’s a lot like having a crowd of cheering fans at a college sports game or performing live for screaming fans at a concert.
You’re not just ‘building an email list.’ You are inviting your fans to join a fun party where they will buy from you because they like you.
You won’t stare at the dashboard wondering if your post has been ‘boosted’ nor will you much care about how much money you make directly from writing platforms.
I look at my four figure Medium payouts and I’m like ‘oh, that’s nice,’ and go right back to focusing on my email list that makes me $20-30,000 per month with less effort than cranking out blog posts.
Picture holding a fresh, glossy, newly printed copy of your book in your hands.
I still remember the first time smelling that ‘new book smell’ wafting into my nostrils from a book I wrote.
Even better though, was looking at my screen and seeing sales notifications roll in from simply sending a few emails to my list of people who were eagerly waiting to buy it.
On average, I get an extra $500 whenever I add a sponsor to an email (price will be going way up soon) I was already going to send.
I’ve seen some writers charge as much as $3,000 per sponsor per email.
The crazy part?
You can run ads for sponsors and sell your own products in the same email.
It’s the financial equivalent of having your cake and eating it too.
You can run polls, surveys, and ask your audience to tell you exactly what to build, which means you don’t have to waste time and energy creating products or writing books nobody wants.
The only time I wanted to quit writing was the one time I launched a product and got zero sales.
After that, I always tested my products with my list first, which guarantees I have a product that will make money.
“OMG I LOVE your newsletter.”
“It feels like you’re reading my mind.”
“I needed this today thank you so much.”
Not only do you get to feel the rush of seeing your words are valued and appreciated, but you get to help people too.
Yes, you like money, but you want your writing to make an impact, be useful to people, and help transform lives.
There’s no better way to do that than starting your newsletter.
I started like all writers start.
I wasn’t making any money.
I had a small audience.
I was trying everything possible to make money writing, but none of it was working.
I wrote freelance blog posts for $30.
I almost landed a paid gig when I was writing at Thought Catalog. An editor there took a liking to me, started mentoring me and gave me feedback on my work.
One day he said:
“The company is giving me a small budget to start paying writers. It won’t be much, but I want to take you on as a paid writer once the freelancer program starts.”
He could’ve said any amount of money and I would’ve said yes.
I was like most writers at that time.
I’d take any job. I’d scrap and hustle for any little bit of cash. I kept posting content more and more and more content thinking that somehow, magically, I would make money as a writer.
I stayed stuck and broke until I started growing my email newsletter.
Initially, I fought it. Everything looked so confusing.
They were throwing all these words at me that I didn’t understand. I was drowning in jargon:
“Lead magnet”
“Opt-in”
“Landing page”
“Funnel”
“Sequences”
“What the hell are they talking about?” I thought.
“Do I need to do this?”
By that time, though, I was getting more serious about my writing and I told myself that if I wanted to make money, I should listen to people who were already making money, who had the lifestyle I wanted, who were living the dream.
I kept seeing the same phrase over and over and over and over and over again.

American author, owner of the Painted Porch Bookshop, and host of the podcast The Daily Stoic
I was a big fan of Ryan Holiday.
He had launched the Obstacle is the Way and it was doing crazy numbers. To date, he’s sold 3,000,000 books. Take the population of San Diego and double it.
That’s how many people bought his books.
“Building an email list is the single best way to communicate with your audience, period.
Better than Facebook, better than Twitter, better than ads.
Because you own it. Because it is a relationship of mutual trust and opt-ins. That is why you need to build one.”
Also around that time, there was this guy named Benjamin Hardy who was writing all these insanely viral posts on Medium.
In the beginning, he didn’t have an email list, but he started one because he wanted to become a traditionally published author.

Bestselling Author, Speaker, and Ghostwriter
"I had a conversation with Jeff Goins back in 2015 when I was just starting and anxious to get a book deal.
At the time, I had a couple thousand email subscribers. He told me to wait a year or two to get a book deal until I had somewhere between 50,000 to 100,000 email subscribers.
With that many, you’ve got the potential (depending on various factors) to get a six-figure book deal.
I took his advice, waiting until I had 100,000 email subscribers, and by that point I had editors from Hachette and Penguin reaching out to see if I wanted to do a book with them."
Also, look at the argument he gives for building one:
“You can make money writing in a few different ways, but very few ways that will directly produce a six, seven, or eight-figure income. On Medium, if you can get between 500,000 and 1,000,000 page views monthly with good engagement, you can probably make six figures on your writing alone. But if you’re not building your email list, then you’re essentially forced to bang out blog post after blog post.
Although good for your ego and developing your skill as a writer, you won’t be building something that can make you amazing money over the long run. You’ll be working paycheck to paycheck. That’s never been interesting to me. If, however, you build an email list, you can eventually get book deals and, if you choose, sell your subscribers other products such as physical products, coaching, online courses, etc.”
I’ve included these full quotes just to make the picture crystal clear. It’s impossible to build a six-figure business without one.
Like I said, I was getting serious about this writing game and I honestly was getting sick and tired of seeing other writers succeed.
I wanted to be one of them.
I’d get those little pangs of envy, like little petty butterflies in my stomach, every time I saw one of these writers talk about how much money they were making, how successful they were, and how many books they were selling.
So I said:
“Screw it. Do I need to build a list to make money? Then I’m going to build a list.”
Wanna know the funny part?
They had this software where if you wanted to make a page to get people to sign up for emails, you could use these templates and you just had to change the words.
I thought you had to know how to code or something complex.
Nope.
If you know how to use Microsoft Word, you can make a page to get emails.
The people at these companies test thousands of different layouts to figure out which one works best.
It’s called “A/B” testing. They hire the world’s top marketing and psychological researchers to figure out inane little details most of us wouldn’t even think of like what color to make a button so that people are more likely to buy, what fonts to use to make the pages easy to read, and what background images influence the emotions people feel.
I figured out how to make the pages.
Then, I started adding links to the page at the end of my Medium posts.
I wasn’t a marketing expert.
I didn’t know nearly as much as I do about copywriting, and writing persuasive words, as I do now.
I just made the page and stuck it at the bottom of my articles.
I remember thinking:
“Why didn’t I do this earlier?”
We have all this emotional build-up anticipation that makes the task seem a lot harder than it is.
I did this with newsletters. I thought I had to be some expert before I could get subscribers.
Not true.
Making the page to get people to sign up for the emails took…minutes.
The software had step-by-step videos so I just watched them and I was good to go.
In the beginning, I didn’t know what to do with the emails, per se.
I didn’t know what to send.
But I started to collect them anyway. I’m so glad I did.

Imagine missing out on having concert halls full of people who you can sell just because you didn’t have the perfect idea or perfect thing to say.
Sadly, this happens all the time.
Eventually, I came up with a theme for my newsletter.
I called it the “Monday Motivation” letter. Each week I’d write a motivational email to my list.
They ate it up like my 7-year-old daughter eats ice cream.
I started learning how to create and sell products via email. I started with books.
To date, I’ve sold $100,000+ worth of books with a combined 900+ reviews.
Like most naive writers do, I published my book and just prayed the Amazon gods would sell the book for me.
They didn't.
I’ve made about $10,000 lifetime from my first book (most of the sales didn’t happen until I re-launched that book to my list).
I made the other $90,000 when I launched the other two books using the power of my newsletter and having a built-in audience to push my book on launch day.
I’ve sold roughly 25,000 copies of my books in different formats totaling around $100,000 in sales.
Without my email newsletter, I never would’ve hit these numbers.
Without an email newsletter, you can say goodbye to becoming a best-selling author.
I’ve sold $400,000+ in digital products.

95% of those sales came from my list and 5 percent came from promoting on writing platforms and social media.
People don’t like to be sold directly from content.
Also, even if you are making money from a platform, like payouts from Medium or X, you’re making pennies in comparison to what you could make with email.
For now, you just need to know that without a newsletter you’re missing out on one of the great goldrushes of our time.
Some creators build entire companies based on their newsletters like Alex Lieberman who sold a newsletter that he started in college, The Morning Brew for $75 million dollars.

Imagine being able to buy 357 new Lamborghinis, just because you started a newsletter.
“Email newsletters are a popular channel for all creators—over half already have an email list and 16% of creators plan to start a newsletter this year
to grow their business.”
The newsletter game is heating up.
Companies like Converkit are spending all of their time thinking of as many different ways as possible to help creators make more money through email.

Competition with these newsletter companies is fierce.
They know that they’ll grow faster if they make it easier, faster, and simpler for creators like us to make money.
If the smartest marketing minds on planet Earth are focused on email marketing, why wouldn’t you be?
I’ve done all three:

There are unique ways to grow your newsletter like referrals, cross-promotions, and even paying for subscribers once you have a big list and bank account.
Bottom line…
More and more creators are finally waking up and understanding that they need a newsletter, which means the competition is getting steeper, which means you needed to start your newsletter yesterday.
You’re smart.
When smart people see a neon green sign pointing to a proven opportunity that all their idols are using to get rich, they understand that they should probably do it too.
Since you’re no dummy, we are at least in agreement that you need to start a newsletter if you want to live a life of freedom as a high-paid professional writer, right?
When you don’t have a roadmap for success the idea of starting a newsletter just makes you feel confused, overwhelmed, and stuck.
Starting a newsletter seems like this big, complicated, daunting mountain to climb that requires you to be a tech whiz and a marketing genius.
Truth is, it’s pretty easy once you get started actually. You just need a step-by-step system.
It’s not your fault.
You didn’t know exactly how the pieces of the puzzle fit together when it comes to email marketing.
You just need someone to show you how in a way that’s simple and easy to understand.
That’s where I come in.

3 Time Best-Selling Author, Top 10 Medium Writer, and Writing Coach
My name is Ayodeji Awosika. I’m a three-time best-selling author, top-10 writer on Medium, and writing coach who has helped 1,000+ students make money writing online.
Using the strategies I am going to share with you in a second, I’ve personally been able to build an email list of close to 37,000 people and it’s growing every day:

I built a full-time business as a self-improvement writer, making six figures per year, before I started teaching others how to write (a lot of writing gurus have only ever made money by teaching other people how to write).
If I could credit one thing to helping me build a full-time writing business, quit my job, make multi-six figures each year, and have the freedom to enjoy my life and travel while I make passive income…
It’s my email list.
I like to ask students why they joined one of my programs, nine times out of ten they say:
"I love your newsletter. I kept reading it and figured if the stuff you give away for free is this good, I could only imagine what your paid stuff can do."
I’ve been mentioned in lists of people’s favorite newsletters alongside huge names in the writing game:

One weird thing about building an email list...
Once it grows, people will start replying to you a lot more.
Sometimes they'll spill their guts and tell you their deepest darkest secrets.
I've had people admit to being trapped in sham marriages for decades, dealing with depression, suffering from alcoholism, and even contemplating ending it altogether.
Lots of people have admitted that they feel like they've wasted their entire lives.
I've also heard crazy success stories.
People have reached out to me to tell me my words inspired them to build a full-time business, quit drinking, travel the world, launch venture-backed startups, fall in love, and even say I've prevented them from ending it all.
When people read your emails all the time they feel like they know you. You feel like you know them.
Some of them will stay on your list for years following your journey every step of the way.
When You Do it Right, You're not Just Writing Emails to Make Money, You're Looking Into the Souls of Men and Women.
The more you make them feel understood, the more they'll trust you.
The more they trust you, the more likely they are to either become a die-hard lifelong fan, buy from you, or both.
Either way, as a writer, it's cool to have a place where you can connect with readers on a deep level.
Social media is a surface-level arena with platitudes, algorithm gaming, and impersonal engineered content.
If you want to be your real self and get people to know, like, and trust who you are...
Start a newsletter.
At minimum, it's a wild and fun adventure you get to go on with your readers. At best, you’ll get rich.
I’m sharing my story to let you know that I was once like you.
I went from nobody knowing who I was and making zero dollars to becoming a household name for many, making more than $1,000,000, and building an asset I can use to keep making money regardless of what happens to writing platforms.
I get it…
This whole process just seems like… a lot… doesn’t it?
Well, fortunately, I spent years bumping my head against the wall trying to figure it out on my own and put together a system based on years of testing, tweaking, and refining my strategy so you don’t have to struggle like I did.
All your pressing questions will be answered.
All your doubts will be put to rest.
All of your second-guessing will come to an end.

"There are writers who publish online. Then there are writers that change the way people think.
Ayo is in the second category. He has created a cult-like audience through honest words that challenge your narrative of the world. His success is the result of a daily writing habit.
Ayo taught me to write ten headlines per day and not let critics take me down. It's also a pretty big secret that Ayo has made a lot of money from his writing.
He's not a flashy guy, but to make the dollars he has shows his talent. I choose to learn from people who have proof-of-work. That's creators like Ayo – and they're bloody rare!"
"Ayo was one of the first writers I followed and learned from on Medium.
I’ve always admired his no-bs style and learned A LOT through his teachings. If you’re thinking about working with Ayo, you need to be ready for change and massive action because he goes all-in to share his wisdom and experience with new writers.
Instead of making false promises and sharing half-backed advice, he’ll get to the point quickly and teach you exactly how to write for an audience of millions of people."
"Ayo's course is a fantastic route for aspiring professional writers.
It covers all the necessary checkpoints to elevate your career. I particularly enjoyed his sections on editing, title craft, and the nod strategy.
Even though I've been writing professionally for years, I learned a number of new things and am now rethinking my approach to content. Writing can be a highly intimidating craft when you are first starting out.
I've long advised creatives should invest in themselves. Taking a course like Ayo's will help you immensely. He's shown me some of the outcomes of his students. They are making real money and performing great."
